hi my name is Jody Perkins I'm a bcba with the company kadiant based out of Atlanta I'm going to be doing some on parent training presentations for you all on different behavior issues that we typically see what Pre-K students said this training today is just going to go over some of the strategies that you're going to hear me repeat throughout several of the presentation so it'll just give you a good idea of what's coming up and what you need to know you know you're with to implement their strategies with your child so a little bit about me just give you a little background I am a married mom of two boys in the dog I live in Georgia as a special education teacher Gwinnett County Public Schools for 20 years and I Anna bcba since June of 2000 with Katie and so like I said we're just going to be talking about some general terms in this presentation but they will be helpful for you throughout the following presentations so the first thing we're going to talk about why do our children do certain behaviors function of behavior is the main principle in Ada applied Behavior Analysis so we always want to know what the function of a person's behavior is and the reality is that all humans engage in behaviors because we like the outcome we like what happens after we engage in that behavior and sometimes it can be really hard to figure out why a child is doing a certain Behavior because it seems like that would not be a fun behavior is Sting like we're giving them punishments that should stop them from wanting to do that behavior but then they don't always work and we wonder why well that has to do with the function of the behavior and if we're not applying strategies that address the correct function we can act we make a behavior worse instead of better so we're to talk first about the four functions of behavior just real quick the first one is attentions of this is your child who loves to get attention and it can be positive or negative attention it doesn't always have to be good attention the second one is escape so this is when you don't like doing something and you want to get away from it so you engage in a behavior to get away from that thing you don't want to do the third one is and will always think of this is touch so it's be it's food it's toys its iPad Electronics it's just getting to that thing that you want to have and then the last one is the automatic or sensory this is the one that doesn't require another person or another thing around do it just doing the behavior itself feels good so the child just engaging in these behaviors because it feels good to engage in them so we're going to look at next at reinforcement then we talked about reinforcement it's just exactly why happened right after a behavior occurs so just have to be good or bad it doesn't have to be like oh I gave him a piece of candy to be reinforcement it's just what happened right after they had the baby the child engaged in a behavior and it's like how to make that behavior occur again in the future so that the behavior keeps occurring and we reinforced it somehow so there are two types of reinforcements that we're going to talk about there's positive reinforcement and there's negative reinforcement reinforcement is when we can give the child something we're adding something to their environment so that might be a piece of candy toys iPad verbal attention we've given them something negative reinforcement is not bad it's just we taking something away play and that reinforced the behavior so that's what we think about that escape function so you know we told our kids to clean up their room and they pitched a tantrum so we could never mind I'll clean up your room we've removed that demand so next time I asked him to clean their room they're probably going to again so a couple examples of positive and negative reinforcement positive reinforcement I'm so in this lower going to look at the behavior when I look at what happened right before the behavior and right after the behavior so before the behavior dad says eat three bites of your vegetables that's what he wants the child to do the child eats three bites of his vegetables so Dad gives the child one of his favorite cookies so because Dad gave the child something he likes a cookie after eating the vegetables the child is more likely to eat three bags of vegetables next time Dad ask him to do that he's positively reinforce that behavior that he wanted to see so negative reinforcement in this scenario before the Hagar is mom tells a child to put his toys away so that's what she wants she wants to persuade the child instead throws a toy at Mom and then after he throws the toy at Mama's mom's like never mind I'll do it she finishes putting the toys away so in the few the child is likely to throw the toys of mom again and maybe even mom said like don't have time out I'll do it so that she thinks she punished because she made him go to child go to timeout but really it reinforced the behavior because that's what the do not put the toys away so some, Behavior strategies that you're going to hear mentioned about these presentations that you're going to need to be familiar with how to do so the first one I talked about the behavior specific price this month we're just going to think the behavior that we want our child to do again or going to name it and we're going to pair it with prey so we're not just saying good job we're going to say good job standing up and walking to the table good job putting your shoes on we're being very specific what were praising them for if we're giving our child tangible so if we're giving them iPad time or a DeLorean Foresters they earned an Eminem we always want to pair that with my Hager specific price so say you know a child have to clean their room and then they can get 5 minutes of I've had time when I go to give them the iPad I'm not going to be like here here's the iPad great job cleaning up your room I love how clean your room is so I'm naming what I want them to do it again and I'm giving that pray as I give them by I'm in there some examples their behavior specific praise great job putting your toys in the Box name the behavior gave the price the next charges were going to talk about our prompt what are different ways that we can prompt her child is work teaching them new skills are teaching them to be compliant with behaviors that we want them to repeat I'm not going to read this slide to you because we're going to watch a video that explains the phone prompting hierarchy it is here if you are like me and you like to refer back to written out instructions you can come back to that on the PowerPoint so here's the video my son Braxton helped with this he helped to make all the videos so you'll see him starring and Minnie videos and we are going to show you the pricing hierarchy video I'm going to be showing you the hierarchy of prom so aren't you the paper I have a circle and I'm going to be able to copy the circle to draw so we're going to go through the hierarchy from least intrusive to most intrusive your child has much as possible and then they can't see them as much and you won't cut them off in ways that we don't want to have a little more control in a little bit you're also not blocking their View Rocky remind me next it's a draw Circle that circular motion he doesn't respond which is my model from he does not respond. Teresa told him Marshall physical prompt my hands are full circle physical props because you did not talk to the entire he did not respond to that parcel physical process only got half of the circle I'm going to move into my post addition to Templeton Shirley hold his hand so that was the prompting Iraqis that will use that you can use with your children to give them the opportunity to respond independently but then provide the support that they need as you are teaching them new skills so the next time you that we're going to talk about it all three stuffed prompting or you might hear at call Garlic so again I'm not going to read you this slide but it's here for you to refer back to if you like the written out instructions we're going to watch to quit videos on guy to compliance the first one is going to show you just how to do that seizure and then the second one is going to show you how we use the behavior specific praise at the different steps of the three step guided compliance that's one give the verbal instructions disabled if they don't comply move this that too verbal instruction with a model you do it five seconds again if they haven't come fly 3 which is physical property so that was just a quick video to show you what three step prompting looks like what the procedure looks like next weekend to look at how you would give praise and each step along the way if your child complies at that stuff now we're going to go over how we would get nobody said that was awesome now we're going to look at what it would look like walk the table light you do it nice walking to table I really like how you did that so notice I still gave Behavior specific price but it was less than look like this is when we're having to give I'll help you you're at the table I can either say no traction or I can just give verbal feedback send back this presentation hopefully some of those strategies will be helpful for you as we move through further presentation I'm and I look forward to seeing you and the next one
