mr. T Perkins I'm a bcba from the ABA company Cadence and Georgia today we're going to talk about how to help your child learn to sit at the table during meal times so if you have watch the basics video in the series yet please do so cuz we are in Houston terminology and strategies that are taught in that segment of the training and it will be helpful for you to know that was before watching today's so today like I said we're going to talk about how to become a big kid sitting in a real chair at the table and being able to participate and Family Mail Time so a lot of times our young children it can be upsetting when we expect them to make changes like moving from the heights the big chair from the booster seat to the big chair but gaining that Independence at mealtimes will really help your child build their confidence and then make meal times more enjoyable for the whole family because that's something we want to do as a family we're going to be able to sit down and eat together so first we're going to talk about sitting at the table so this is usually you know one of the biggest issues is being able to keep your child seated at a table during meal time so when and why do we want to eat search how to set the table while we know that children are ready to move out of their high chair between 18 months to three years of age that's a big range so you're going to think about your child size their horse trained their ability you know to sit at the table independently and then you can also use a booster seat as a transition if you need to so that your child can actually reach the table that kind of thing I'm being able to sit in a regular chair threw out a meal decreases the likelihood of your choking or other accidents so if your child is not stable and that regular chair and they're up and moving around a lot there's a chance that you know that they might choke or have some other accident I'm sitting in a regular chair increases independent Sentinel times thanks needed throughout a male is an important social Norm so when we go into social settings food and Mail Time is a really big social event and it's expected that you're going to set the table to eat and figure that Mel experience a man as your child goes to school and two other places in the community they're going to be expected to sit on a variety of seating and their settings a lot of schools you know the lunch table or just those little stools that are connected to the table that everybody sit so your child needs to learn to be able to sit at the table in some kind of honesty that Nina doesn't have the seat belt or the tray like the high chair does so we're going to use a procedure called when we talk about I'm helping our child learn to sit at the table and shaping is just works reinforcing closer and closer attempts to the desired skill or behavior so I like to think of shaping is it's a marathon not a Sprint so think about if you are training for a marathon you can do that couch to 5K program you're not going to go out there and run a mile in the first day or run you know a 5K in the first day you're going to run like two-minute intervals and then walk and then run 2 minute intervals and walk and then each day that you go run you're going to increase the amount of time that you are running that's basically what shaving is and Laura talking about the sitting at the table that's exactly what we're going to do we're going to expect our how to set up the table for a very small amount of time and if they can do that we're going to increase how long we expect them to sit at the table before we provide reinforcements does it get started we need to do a couple of things to prepare we need to assess our child currently is what type of chair are they currently needing do we need to purchase a booster seat to help them move from the high chair to the regular chair how long does our child sit at the table while eating so take a couple of mealtimes and a timer and time how long child sit there before they jump up you're going to want to identify some of your child's favorite foods cuz we're going to use those in the beginning to help train them have a timer available preferably one that your child can see and understand go ahead Identify some strong edible or tangible reinforcers for your childhood that might be potato chips toy cars I've had time TV time and you're going to have to limit access to these outside of these male X so if you choose Eminem's as a strong reinforcer you're talkin only have Eminem's during the smell time procedure he choose iPad your child can only use the iPad during the smell time procedure and then you might want to find some books or videos about sitting at the table all times are table manners or create a social story for your child so that you can review those with your child to help prepare them for what your expectations are and then we're going to be using a very specific visual in his procedure it's a red or red and green car that has red on one side green on the other and I will show you an example of this so here you go this is would be the red side and on the red side is going to say time to sit and then on the green side it's going to say all done and have a that shows you're talkin stand up so this visual is going to be really important for this procedure so the procedure is written out here on this slide and the next slide I'm not going to read it to you right now because we do have on two videos that are going to demonstrate how you would implement this procedure the first video is going to show you how you would implement the procedure if your child is not setting for the predetermined time and you have to receipt them and then the SEC videos going to show you how you would respond if your child says for that predetermined length of time independently so the videos we will be on the next couple of slides and you can review and then if you need you go back and read through the instructions on how to implement those strategies you can do that and it'll be written out for you I know I always like to have written instructions along with the video so I can go back and see if I'm missing anything there so in this video we're going to demonstrate to you the procedure for helping your child sit at the table while start timer for hey we're eating he's eating before that timer goes off and I'm just going to block him, remember you're sitting at the table great job appreciate how to reinforce this point if you want to 30-second interval if I'm going to remove the food he wants to eat more start the procedure over again in this for your word of interest rate how you would respond if your child the fork is at the table cuz we're on red it's time to sit we're going to sit with it for now start a timer for sitting to eat your food today sitting at the table all the different times I'll just keep giving a specific phrase you're sitting that's right the timer. For the full 30 seconds I did not have to receive eating a lunch today while I use that you're on the Green and I'm also giving him access to that really preferred reinforcer against continue eating for me I'm fine as long as he stays if he requests couple of don'ts for when you get ready to implement this procedure with your child don't pick a stressful or super busy time to implement this you're going to need time and patience like I said it's a marathon not a Sprint this going to take you know several weeks to get to where we want to get you notes just sit for an entire meal time so give yourself to pick a time when it's not going to be too stressful don't expect perfection in the first few days this is not you know we're not going to do it for one day and have them sit through an entire meal there's that it's going to take yeah there's going to be some bumps along the way and that's okay don't get discouraged if there's that back so maybe your child started off sitting for 2 minutes and now they're sitting for 10 minutes and they're doing great and they have a day where like they're just not they're refusing to sit and sit at the table don't discourage those things happen and you're going to continue with the plan and keep going and that consistency will pay off don't introduce the caring family melt I'm sorry end goal is to be able to sit there a family meal time or be able to sit through a social Mill event but that's not where we're going to start you're going to start this like during one-on-one one-on-one Mill time snack time if you take that Baseline data your child's Baseline for sitting is really low like one minute I would do this at snack time not a mail time cuz you're going to have really small intervals expecting them to sit and then don't allow your child to access food when they are not sitting at the table so even if it's snack time even if it's the middle of the day we're not eating or drinking away from the table any eating or drinking needs to take place at the table all the time this will cut down on confusion and will give consistency to help your child understand that expectation and then really really important never restrict your child's food intake to a dangerous level so if you're trying to do this procedure with this shaping procedure with and they're not eating like they are just refer thing to eat you need to stop and then go consult with your child's doctor or behavioral professionals so that you can safely work on these behaviors because we never the child's food intake to a dangerous level thank you so much for coming today and I hope this was helpful
