hi my name is Jody Perkins I'm a bcba from kadian in Georgia I'm staying with my talk about potty training if you haven't watch the basics video in the series yet please do so first cuz I am going to use some terminology and strategies covered in that presentation that you're going to want to know about so let's get started talking about potty training so when we get ready to potty train our child we do I need to make sure that our child is showing some potty Readiness skills are some things are going to look for is that our talk and follow instructions that they can imitate our Behavior they can copy what we're doing but they haven't good Mobility so they can walk they can help. undress themselves and they've shown some interest in the toilet so you know they follow you to the bathroom they asked to use the toilet or the potty chair they ask for underwear under some signs your child is ready for potty training something's been going to consider before we begin potty training and what you're telling us to be healthy so no diarrhea or constipation if your child has chronic stomach issues you're going to want to consult with your child's doctor before you begin potty training if it all possible you relax time in your child's life so they haven't just like moved to a new house and have a new sibling so a calm relaxed time if it all possible and if it all possible that your child is cooperative following directions Province without Tantrums org the behavior I know that may not always be possible we may just have to jump in and deal with compliance and potty training at once but if possible looking for them to have gotten to that stage of being more Cooperative does something. my concern during potty training we want to think about the type of seat we're going to introduce our child to so a lot of times you know we like to use those little toddler Pilates things like that or put the ring on the toilet we just want to be careful and that you know I'm some kids can become really dependent on the first thing they're introduced to so if your child can use the regular toilet seat that's the best option so just consider that should you keep your child and diaper pull-ups underwear completely naked when you're potty training them so what we know from research is that wearing diapers or pull-ups increases accidents and decreases the successfulness of using the toilet so the recommendation is that your child wear regular underwear during the day help them during potty training some people often wonder if they have a voice their boys sit or stand during potty training so in the beginning stages we would recommend that both boys and girls sit while potty training on this is to help them learn the process that's before we would have to start worrying about aim and accuracy and all of that stuff so what day it is best if they are bladder and bowel trained before we have them stand now once they're ready to stand you know you can help them work on that aim by like putting a Cheerio in the toilet they have to aim their you're into try to hit the Cheerio it makes it a fun game helps them learn how to aim which is so super important if you have boys I have two boys and it was not on the years before there a man proved about your child's diet so you want to be sure that your child is getting enough fibers and liquids because they need these to be able to use the bathroom but they don't get enough fiber and liquids are not going to use the bathroom and they're going to have less opportunities to practice it can also mean that using bathrooms painful for them if they don't have enough fiber in liquid and if it's painful to use the to let your child's not going to want to use the toilet we also want to think about schedule in routine so potty training does take some time and effort and so when you first in Urdu you want to pick a time where you have like a couple of days where you can just stay home and this is what your family is going to focus on his potty training so you know a break in school is a good time when you have a couple days off work if there's not lots of extra activities going on so you're going to be prepared to have to take your child to potty frequently for several weeks so you may be taking your child to the potty every hour the first couple of days and then it may be like every hour and a half every two hours for several until they learn the process and then once your child is consistently using the toilet when you take them you want to start to plan for more natural trips to the fullest so like when are the normal times people usually go to the bathroom when they first wake up 30 minutes after they eat eat right before you leave the house right before bathroom bedtime and then when you get to that more natural stage of the toilet trips you want to maybe think about using a visual schedule which we covered those in another presentation so if you haven't watch that you might want to if you're using that visual schedule then we would just include the bathroom visits on that schedule and then we want to think about being able to be consistent and all the locations your child is during the day because if we're not consistent with toilet training can really derail the plan in the progress so homeschool Day Care everywhere needs to be on board and consistent when you start this process so how are we going to do it let's get started so the first thing we need to do is the about potty training really begins outside of the bathroom there's a lot of prep work we need to do before we even introduce our child into the bathroom setting so we're going to find some books and videos things about using the potty to read their child watch with their child off to introducing the concept of using the body there so many fun ones out there. There's plenty you should be able to find one with your child's favorite character but make that fun and introduce it to them let your pick out special new underwear so we want to have them in underwear during the day let it be under where they're going to love is comfortable that's the characters they like on it and make it fun and interesting if you're going to be using visuals during potty training go ahead and create those model using the bathroom for your child to the same kind of funny but you know take your child into the bathroom with you let them see you using the bathroom if you know you have a boy bad maybe he wants to be the parent to do this if it's a girl maybe Mom we have older siblings that are age appropriate for this you know that you could have them model with you their present to oversee and then when your modeling you're just going to want to narrate what you're doing I'm sitting on the potty now now I'm going pee pee now I'm going to it's kind of things that your child gets an idea of how that looks allow your child time to go into the bathroom and explore like just sit on the toilet even if they're fully closed but then flush it here with that sounds like and then you're just going to be really pie positive and get feedback while they're exploring as your prompting your child what to do in the bathroom be sure you tell them what you want them to do and avoid saying things you don't want them to do so like flush the pot or hands on your lap Don't Touch the Water. Stick their hands in the toilet water gross I know but they're probably not try it identify your child's top three reinforcers that are either tangible or edible this might be iPad tie my favorite toy car how many marshmallows a lollipop I'm so you're going to identify those reinforcers and then you're going to restrict access to them outside of the bathroom that means you're not now that your child have these things unless they have successfully use the toilet and then you want to spend a couple of days observing your child so that you know when are they likely to use the bathroom and maybe you want to write this down maybe you keep like a couple of days of data this is the time my child use the bathroom so that you get an idea of how often there ceiling and when and also look for the signs that they give that they are using the bathroom are there about 2 so I know with my oldest son bowel movement training took a lot longer than the other potty training and he would always run behind find a chair or piece of furniture and kind of squat down and we knew then he was about to have a bowel movement so look for those signs that your child gives that they are about to use the potty or are using it so then we have to get prepared and get ready Implement our plans so we're going to go ahead and dresser child in this regular underwear but like we talked about they can still wear pull-ups or Diapers at night because that potty training is going to come later we want to make sure the child's drink plenty of fluids throughout the day when we're doing potty we want to avoid salty foods or drinks because that can actually make them retain the water and not use the bathroom we want to have those reinforcers readily available so if it's many marshmallows make sure you've gone to the grocery store and stock stop on mini marshmallows if it's iPad time make sure that iPad is charged so you want to have it ready and available for every successful void every time your child goes to the bathroom successfully on the toilet so when you're going to give those reinforcers you're going to wait until your child completely gone to the bathroom so don't give it like Midstream or just because they sat on the potty wait until they completely finished using the bathroom and then give that reinforcements and be sure to pair that reinforcer with that enthusiastic Behavior specific praise all the time I want to be sure he isn't here to I love how you went pee pee in the potty pad for 5 minutes or great job you use the toilet you get 3 mini marshmallows so just be sure to give that behavior specific prey remember accidents are going to happen they will don't get discouraged it's going to happen it'll be okay when they do happen you want to just use a neutral tone of voice to remind your child where they're supposed to use the bathroom remember we go pee pee in the potty and then immediately take your child to sit on the toilet when you do that have your child change into clean clothes they need to be a part of this process so don't do it all four of them have them help with the  every dressing and then also have your child help clean up his or her accident again you know don't do it all for them but also this should not be a punishment or shameful moment we're not trying to shame them or punish them by making them clean up but we do want them to see you know it takes more effort to have an accident and have to change clothes and clean everything out than it does to go sit on the toilet and use the bathroom remember that bowel training comes after potty training after urination training and it may take some time so you know it might not happen within a week or two after your tolerance to urinate on the toilet at maybe several months down the road and that's okay and you're just going to respond successful bowel movements the same way you do to successful urination void are you going to respond to those bowel movement accidents the same way we do to the potty training accidents and then never ever ever seen your child for bathroom accidents we're just going to remain calm and use a neutral tone of voice accidents are a natural part of the process what is a natural life thing that happens we all have to learn how to do it so we just want to be sure that we are not shaming our child during this process set a research-based approach to potty train C-Train all the regular stuff just hasn't really work so you need something more structured to do so this is a really great way to do that so take that Baseline data like we talked about observe your child see how often are you in the bathroom every 30 minutes just check to see if diaper pull-up is wet or dry and record how the time that the time that it's wet so once you know how often your child is having wet diapers or pull up so maybe it's like every hour and 30 minutes take a Time intervals of my child is wet about every hour and 30 minutes I'm going to use a time interval of about like an hour and 20 minutes an hour and 15 minutes I'm going to set my timer for that time interval and then when the timer goes off I'm going to present them with a bat room Visual Land model verbalizing the need to use the bathroom and then you're going to have your child sit on the toilet for up to 20 minutes or until he or she weighs so when you take them in the bathroom set timer for 20 minutes if they don't use the bathroom when the timer goes off you're going to get them off the toilet and go through the routine get it you know the bathroom routine I'm if they do who is the bathroom then they don't have to sit there the whole 20 minutes say that you bathroom like at 8 minutes and great they finish using the bathroom to get off the toilet while your child is sitting on the toilet and waiting to see if they use the bathroom give them something to do but not one of those highly preferred reinforcers up iPads a reinforcer not the I may be something like books listening to music playing with a toy and it should be something that I enjoy but not one of those highest reinforcers then if your child has a successful voice going to provide that enthusiastic Behavior specific phrase and access to one of the highly preferred reinforcers and remember they're only getting access to that reinforcer when they successfully use the toilet if your child does not have a successful voice has a neutral tone of voice inside I'll try again in a little bit and then help your child complete the bathroom retrain laundry dressing washing their hands and direct them to a neutral activity outside of the bathroom so maybe they're going to go color maybe we're going to go eat lunch whatever it was it was next on the schedule and then reset timer for the next bathroom trip if your child does not successfully use the bathroom you're going to want to set that timer for like maybe 25 minutes so that you're getting them back in the bathroom by a 30-minute time. If they did successfully use the bathroom you're going to reset timer for whatever time interval you had already established so I can an hour and 15 minutes hour and 20 minutes and that's basically all there is to it there's a few other resources here if you want to check them out good luck and happy potty training
