hi my name is Jody Perkins I'm a bcba from the maybe a company KTM based out of Atlanta we are today going to be talking about how we can help our child transition from the bottle sippy cup if you have not watched the basics video on Behavior Basics first please do so so that you'll be familiar with the strategies that we are going to talk about in these presentations like I said today's presentation how do we transition from that bottler that sippy cup is because part of becoming a big kid is giving those up and it that can be upsetting to our children at first change is always difficult are often difficult for young children they like Security in 13 so anytime we change something major like this that can be upsetting for them but it's really important to help them meet their development and social Milestones that we help them transition to a regular cup so why do we want to do this and when should we do this so the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend about 12 to 24 months of age and from the sippy cup of 48 to see can see that kind of overlaps there but we want our child to be using a regular cup or a cup with a straw around age two bottles and sippy cups allow the sugars to sit in our child's mouth a lot longer which can lead to Easton Dental problems and lots of dentist appointments and lots of money spent the prolonged change the position of a child's tongue or teeth which can be speech articulation issues and Bliss I'm so that can be you know a long-term detrimental effect if we don't help our child transition and time and then also your child might use the ball or sippy cup as a replacement for their pacifier so I know we also want to get rid of pacifiers by a certain age and if we do that but then our child still using the bottle of the sippy cup we might end up with some of those same issues before we Implement a program to go read of that bottle or sippy cup there's some prep work we have to do we have to get ready so the first thing we want to do is assess where our child currently is what are they currently drinking out of are they drinking out of a bottle are they drinking out of specific kind sippy cap do they use that bottle or sippy cup only at Miller stack times are there a carrying it around with him sipping on something all day long and then what size cup is that usually hold him so you do need to be aware of being at your child's Motors Bill's their strength you don't want to give them like a huge Tervis Tumbler or qg a teacup they're not going to ready for that yet so be sure that you know that you pick something that's appropriate for their age in their size if your child has any kind of feeding issues be sure you consult with your doctor before you change their bottle or cup if there's a medical need there you need to consult with your doctor before you make that change you want to bring your bottle or sippy cup Supply down to just one or two and you're going to store them in a place you control the access to so we don't want these all over the house for the kid can just go grab them anytime they want them we just want one or two that we have in a place that only the adults can access then you need to identify what your child's favorite what is their favorite thing to drink that they can always choose what to drink this is what they would choose then also Identify some strong edible or tangible reinforcer so like mini marshmallows iPad time something your child really really bikes and will likely do new things and work hard to get access to once you've identified those strong reinforcers limit the access to them outside of this bottle or sippy cup transition time so if you identify the iPad is a strong reinforcer your child can't be play on iPad all day long they can only play on the iPad during this strategy or if you identify that they love chocolate chip cookies chocolate chip cookies I only have them as the reinforcer for this strategy good news is I won't be forever and then you can also find some books or videos about giving up the bottle or sippy cups or you can make a person my social story for your child and Dover and read and review these things with her child before you start implementing this strategy just to give them an idea of what's going to happen and help prepare them for the change that's coming so the procedure there any use is going to be a shaping or if they procedure so we're going to be shaping our kids use of a regular cup and we're going to be stating that bottle or sippy cup away so if your child is transitioning from a bottle to a sippy cups that I've never used to sippy cup before don't even consider starting with a sippy cup that has a straw rather than a spout because a straw is a more natural way to drink from a cup and it doesn't have as many of the medical issues that using a sippy cup spout can cause over time if so we want to make our child's current drinking receptacle whatever it is they currently drink out of a car make it less desirable but prepare by pairing it with a non preferred beverage so it's a drink. Drink if they're thirsty but it's not their favor drink some water but why I'm so you're going to make the new cop more desirable by pairing it with your child's favorite beverage you've identified that great Kool-Aid is your child's favorite beverage so that's what's going to go in the new cup that we want them to use your only going to allow access the beverages at the table during meal or snack time so they're not going to walk around the house with a cup bottle of something to drink only if they're at the table if your child wants to drink between Miller snack X that's fine I mean I do I want to drink something all day long so just require them to come to the table while they're drinking so that we're setting that standard and staying consistent with that and then once at the table present your child with the new cup that's filled with a small amount of their favorite beverage so we're not going to fill that cup up like probably not even a fourth the way I'm just a couple steps about favorite beverage to begin with you're going to prompt them to drink from that cop at natural times throughout the day but the Miller to snack you may need to physically prop them at first and that's fine they may need you to help them use the cop figure out how to position it how to turn it up. It's fine go ahead and prove and that enthusiastic Behavior specific praise after each attempt to drink from the new cup even if they spill it even if it makes the mess even if they miss their mouth we're still going to praise and reinforce that they are trying to drink from that new cup child has finished the liquid in the new cup remove it and present them with their old copper bottle filled with that non-preferred beverage so now we're going to fill it out like so we drank a little bit of grape Kool-Aid now we're going to give them their old sippy cup build with water and that and I'll just drink it naturally throughout the middle just like they have then but we're not going to provide any praise our attention from drinking from this cup every few days I want to increase the amount of liquid in the new cup and decrease the amount of liquid in the so when your child is consistently drinking at least half a cup from the new Cup begin to introduce other beverages in the new cup but keep the least preferred beverage in the old cup so maybe they also like apple juice and they also like Sprite soda we are going to bring those in into that new cop for a while as they get better at drinking from it but we're just going to keep water in that cup if your child drinks from the new cup without engaging in undesired Behavior so they don't throw it out you they don't have tantrum they don't scream you're going to give access to that strong reinforcers of that chocolate chip cookie or that I've had time and give that behavior specific price for Kool-Aid classic continue drinking from the new crop honor their request and you know give him a little bit more Kool-Aid in it the more they practice with it the better of course you know you're going to know your limits of how much Kool-Aid or how much do she want them to have cut it off there but definitely if they ask keep drinking from it if you can keep letting them drink from it you don't have to take it away just because they finished it and then once your child is drinking a variety of beverages consistently from that new cup get rid of the old cup it goes in the trash it goes the cousin it go somewhere but don't keep it in the house so a couple of things that you don't want to do while you're doing this procedure don't pick a stressful or super busy time to try to implement this you just moved to a new house don't do this it's the week before Christmas don't do this wait until you know life is a little calmer don't expect perfection in the first few days there's going to be messes there's going to be spills they're not going to get how to do it don't expect them to do it perfectly don't be discouraged if they're set back so it isn't very common that your child will make great progress and drink like half a cup out of that new cup for several days and then have a day where they like spilling everywhere and have a tantrum and iron into that's normal it's okay just keep going expect there's going to be spills and messes there's going to be just keep cleaning supplies and extra clothes close by when you're first implementing this so that you can easily clean it up it doesn't have to disrupt the middle time nobody to get upset and we want to keep things calm and stress-free during this process don't during or immediately after undesired Behavior so if your child is having a tantrum at the lunch table do now give in and give them that bottle of that woke up during that tantrum you need to wait till that has calm down and then you can present it to them and then never restrict your child's fluid intake to a dangerous level so if your child is just absolutely refusing to drink from that new car don't keep that going for more than you know like half a day couple hours I'm go ahead and give them liquids however they'll take it and then consult your doctor because we don't want to make our chocolate dehydrated we don't want to cause medical issues from not drinking so if it becomes that big of an issue that they will not drink out of the new cup at all then you're going to need to go ahead and get fluid into them and they can see your doctor or private therapist what the next steps are so that is all for the transition to the regular cup hope this was helpful thanks so much
