welcome to the BCS Tech podcast episode number thanks for doing this I'm instructional technology coordinator Scott Webb it's a pleasure to be back on the program and it's a pleasure to have my old running mate on the radio with the Walker Valley Sports Zone dancing with a lot of media things together we served a lot of things together Miss turbo borders the assistant principal in charge of the business and medical are NBA medical and Business Academy here at Walker Valley High School you doing great been awhile since I've been on this microphone so very much looking a little bored in front of you and then you AWOL yes I did I thought that's my fault I take total responsibility for that he's my golf buddy how to choose golf balls to do a lot of searching for lost golf balls together but it's it's great that we get to see what's going on these podcast have been variety things we talked to Corey Lindbergh about some leadership stuff we talked to the grants team did a great job talking explaining about grants and how grants are being used in Bradley County today took two and I spoke as little he's he's season he's a seasoned veteran like that he's a seasoned veteran and teaching job here and does a great job in the classroom because you for a lot of people don't know you got it you have a dual role really you spent half of the year at in an assistant principals wrong then you spend the other half the year and a teaching where I'm going I have coined the phrase I am a teacher straighter Artesian spring and administration false I miss I never thought I would say there's days you never if I can walk out the door today and never come back but I could but I miss being around the kids I mean I'm thinking about right now what I'm doing next semester in classroom because I still have that you know after 30 years I still enjoy being friends kids in interacting those kids and this is a great opportunity because you know where not when I was going looking into Administration one of my biggest fears was getting in it and not liking it and then been out like not being a right into the classroom and teaching classes at and you know to give me the opportunity so I get to do in the fall and be teaching spring so I really have the best of both worlds cuz I left both of them got some questions you were going to talk just talk about a ninja today but what initially LED you to become a teacher teaching was not my initial wasn't that a lot of this guy here that way but I'll give you the initially I was I was looking the medical field did not get in I missed it like half a point on the GPA so I did not even get an interview so I had a good friend of mine that I'm was going to MTSU so I wouldn't amp tissue not having a clue what I was going do and as one of their head all these biology classes and still really not sure was going to do and you finally my brother one day and I have many teachers my family and my brother said hey why don't you be a teacher and Mike idexx never thought about that why want to be a teacher he said well you love you got all these biology classes you can teach biology you love baseball and Coach baseball give it thought that's okay I hadn't thought about it and then 30 years later here I am so that got kind of sidetracked but I think things happen for a reason and you know I always say that teaching is not work today at the day that I dislike my job today I'm walking right now I'm still here at 2:30 you're so I got a lot of us especially those of us that have been in that end in v Athletics kind of teaching is kind of a way to get into coaching but then once we get into this was Mike's parents once once I got into you know the teaching side of things that became the passion if the coaching was I mean I loved it and was always passionate about it but but the teaching in in in and helping our kids really was the kind of thing the driving force that led me where I am to Jeremy if you look at it from the coaching staff you're you're you're teaching your sport what you what you love obviously and then teaching your subject matter what you love so you know I'm a science guy all the way in and like I said you know having an opportunity today this this at Walker Valley high school today human anatomy which is my love that's that's why I was going to the medical field I mean like I said it's you know people talk about going to work at this is not work to me it's not work at all I mean there's not a day I get up going what else can I do because I think things happen for a reason I think I'm here for a reason and like I said I thoroughly enjoyed it well you do a great job maybe we'll talk about this is kind of a technology podcast we will talk about do you have in your room teaching on what do you like what do you dislike about that the teaching profession because it's not a perfect world oh no no long list of likes you know I like the social interaction with the kids I enjoy seeing kids grow up enjoy the interaction among the faculty members at login a lot of my good friends are faculty members of I love you obviously you know I mean it is what it is Teachers we we get a lot of time off you know snow day do we know pictures of snow days but that's what I mean they get in it for that but that that's just a benefit of said it's it's not the reason you're high but but people that don't teach for living don't understand that we need this time to recharge let you know in contrary to belief we don't get paid during the summer you know that is 17 month contract we don't get paid in the summer I will get a paycheck over the summer but it's extended over 12 months so I'm going to throw it out these people think we can pay the summer we don't the dislikes I think it's probably the same thing that all teachers is paperwork stuff home hours and hours upon grading papers that's the only thing that I can really thinks this question is not on the list you need for spective as-built administration teacher but I we do a lot of testing now then wait that we've ever done in and there's a lot of people that complain about Dennis early testing in general but the amount of testing that goes on I think I was just in a meeting talking to a student kids bass mean in biology why do we dissect a frog me and my parents are  and the Frog you had my mother in class why do we dissect a frog I said two words State Testing we don't have time standards you know where to get to the standards because the kids are tested on it I took a lot of freedom away from from when I teach when I first started teaching we we dissected frogs pigs we need the insect collections we did Wildflower we did all these fun projects that we can't do anymore because we have to get to the standards because you have so many standards you taking out the creativity that we used to have in class because when I first started there was no testing but only testing was what you doing in class and then stay gets involved and now we can talk about that for can be a whole other podcast episode did you think teachers have enough saying what's happening in terms of the school's curriculum in in in other educational decisions teachers like for example yesterday Administration will you sit down and we kind of went over the matches schedule I know when my Academy I went to teachers and say I need I need input give me your concerns what can we do differently next year tell me about your classes near the business department talk to me so what I made a list of everything that their concerns and you know we sit down and we did matches schedule yesterday and you know we employment how much can your dog cry if you don't have your just it's your vision it's not a shared Vision experts and they need to tell me what they need I need text number of of computer apps classes we need this we need that I would never know that unless these teachers come up and tell me things so yeah they have it they have a lot of input on things around here looking at the community in general do you think teach are actively involved in the community and I know this is this is softball because there's some great things that are happening in this school and talk about some of the activities in church for example I think a whole ministrative team goes to the same church I've had former manufacturer mr. green used to be one of my Sunday school teachers County know at First Baptist Church we have a lot of teachers involved in me a dance dancing teams outside of school we have teachers that are involved in the Boy Scouts I mean they're it teachers all over the place they're involved in our community and if you get out and about you'll see them as there's a lot of clubs and stuff there call and helping and doing a lot of Outreach here I know I worked helping work on Gathering co-producing a form so they could do their little sing that are there working on the drive it's not just as a teacher but anybody should I I mean we do the contest you know getting getting money and food for those people Thanksgiving that are less fortunate than us and we deliver the went out with me personally but the club's deliver this this stuff to to the needy families and we have in our Christmas you know we have what they go in there with us again children less fortunate than we are being able shop around you know it for for these clubs meet with these kids and then get them presents and so I mean yeah we are very actively involved outside of community I think Walker Valley does a great job of that do you think I did what are higher moral standards for teachers then then other people in the community absolutely I think I think our standard to probably have to be president absolutely I mean there are things you should use common sense I mean it but we are put up on the pedestal and for good reason because we respond if your children if you can be her sponsor for my child did not I'm going to hold you to a higher standard just because of that so absolutely yes I think that is definitely true you're probably maybe outside of clergy that's where especially in this area where we currently live about the belt buckle of the Bible belt mean but it's it's important because of what the impact you have on on students on a daily basis or I mean you see all the time on the news she have a teacher that makes a poor decision and boom it's there you know so yes we are held up to harm or moral standard but I have no problem with that you know none whatsoever so anyway that's your question yes we are well we're going to dip or going to just dip your toe we're not putting the whole foot in I'm just going to different tell but just to get the answer to this question do you think the teacher should be politically active yes one of the things that we get is teachers don't vote we don't have enough teachers voting teachers complain and stuff but only comes to vote they don't vote so we preach when it becomes vote season which it is right now and we try to encourage teachers to get out there make your voice is known about because people do see that you know and then and you can't complain if you don't vote so I think yes we need to be more for that special one of my issues in and I'm not going to get too preachy here but you know we talked about the standards and in the course of the where the state is kind of taking education part of that falls in our responsibility or that we have to be more active and more vocal and making sure that that the we had excuse me as we had as a as a state is is is a direction we need to be going and sometimes I think those in Nashville especially those in Washington don't always see the big picture it's it's what they need they need tea helps your nose expertise need to be teachers that are on the ground every single day working and not just you know supervisors and superintendents and all those people are important but those people that work in day today those teacher I think they need to have a bigger voice absolutely you been in this a while so I don't want to see if we can if you can recollect how far back but but what was what were the teacher preparation requirements for you when you begin teaching ly what was the score look like for you as you are starting your journey into the Propel might be the college preparation preparation. Well we did my student teaching we did it in one location for the whole semester and we talked for the majority this semester I think things have changed a little bit now where students are placed into settings do you have a middle school maybe in high school and they only teach two weeks of that time you know when I when I do my student teaching week to my teacher said here you go I'll see you December so I mean I I talked to whole semester and then when you when we got out we had about two weeks before graduation and we went through our I forget what they call it it's equivalent to our technology training today they showed us how to use the overhead door I forgot what you called when you make a copy so so you had a baby it would be curious I really need to talk to some of these newbie teachers how much technology training like that they get now cuz I'm not even sure they get as much training like that is it half way you did when you finish doing teaching that last 2 weeks was your again I forget what they call it but they trying to see what little technology was available man but and then you know and then that was it pretty much you had a major and then your minor might my major is biology in the mind of a secondary education so yeah and it was so similar to mine mine was in I started out as a counting so I started out of the business teacher with that with a minor in and secondary education so I don't know I don't really know it's been awhile it's been awhile what was your beginning salary 18500 mm 500 down I thought it I thought I'd still go until I started paying the car payment that apartment rent but the 18500 2000 in the sad thing was is I think I started I think I'm 9 years 9 years behind you I think I was at 24 or 9 years introductory salary went up about 6 grand as a county we have migrated we've gotten a little better over the course of the last several years the only thing I don't like is when you get to 25 years you top out I mean unless you watch something right you know it but I'm sorry now is what the forties it's about coming so it's at 5 but we're still towards the lower end of the spectrum we so kind of struggle a little bit what was your most humorous instant I guess in your teaching career not I'm sure there's been several we've had some fun times together I pay back to me and you Pat Doherty down field tech lab shooting some late night there so many I guess faculty Sandpoint was a umbrella Junior of the we were in you were there it was a close-knit family we know we we got along it was great love these guys and talk with the bed I'll bring it Harold Morris remember mr. River Herald Herald he's one day in the in the teacher playing Center in that so I got those keys and got the keys to the vending machine open the vending machine up and hung them in there like a like a back of a text yet. Pay you to pay to get his his keys the vending machine so I that's pretty funny babe back in the day this is back when we still had corporal punishment and I had to do it one time and I used in the Merit system my kid got five demerits he got to choose to tension right offs or paddling well they may choose and so he chose right off so I said okay then I have to have him tomorrow will he come in next they didn't have them I said well since you didn't have them then yeah we not real wasn't it's automatic idling okay so we came in and we went in the hallway and he was headed very concern look on his face and in the head on these really like almost these little warm up you know what I'm talking about right and what's wrong you know you got this in the face he said Miss borders he said I'm not going to lie to you that I went to bed last night and I'm burnt all over so I can have a lot alright alright I'll take it easy and and I did but you just connect you know and stuff like that it's a bit it's fine it's just there's a lot of little things like that and I think that's part of what makes it so great experience what's your most memorable student you know it's hard and I always and for me I can't pick one you have to pick a dozen but you know if you had one or two who would be your most I already know where to start you know I'll go back in the day I have former students like when my first students was dr. Chad eslinger who's might now my son's dentist you know he's hey days will my first year first year teaching he was my first year student man there so I mean the ones that stand out are the ones that I see today like there are men that are several teachers in the school right here their former students so those I have maple Richards Lauren Lindberg Colby Burruss deformity of former students Danny Collins is one of my former students and he's our principal here I mean those what's the type that really stand out the ones that I'm I'm waiting in AJ Lee and I reminded that I'm informing teacher I don't I don't need to be reminded that daily I know I'm getting old I guess we'll ask this way if you had to do over would you would you still pick teaching as a profession yes I coach baseball talk talk tricked out loud and Indian Valley started to open in the first years there three things I want to do my teaching career I want to be able to teach human anatomy I want to be able to coach High School baseball and I want to teach you school so walk Valley open up and all three of those fell into my lap and again I think that things happen for a reason I couldn't I can't imagine doing anything else I can I tell you my all time I I can't imagine working for a living outside of Professor well then I would give anything I'd rather do I can't think anything that wanted it's just it's just I mean. You either love it or you hate it I mean I've been around teachers that are miserable and in kids pick up on that they know it and they don't want to be here but I never been accused of that kid I love it and I love what I do and it's just great profession what would you do well what do you think what do you think the school does well we have a great student body here we have great teachers here we we are at as indicated by our scores this just came out yesterday it is public that Walker Valley has a 22.3 ACT score which is phenomenal we are graduation rate 97% you know yeah I would wear just a great school we do a lot of things well our fourth quarter Band program is it stops in the state you know this past your softball team made it to the state tournament finish runner-up you know we do a lot of things well here we have a great Administration we have a great staff when students you know being on the ministrative side I see that more because there's not a whole lot of issues that go on that I see on the news daily from other schools it's just it's just a good place to work? It's hard for me to leave because it was such a good place to work and improve upon what I was always room for improvement on things that I mentioned you know weird we're trying to reach that 23 score on the ACT as a school and I think we'll get there just you know I don't know there's just the things that we do so we can prove on a little bit at a time but I mean as it is a whole I think you know I think we're great did you get good support from from the parents and the community here in when you're in the hot weather in the classroom you know parents are your biggest asset from classroom teaching standpoint it all it takes and in most cases you know back when I started support was a lot better because it when I mean when I was in school and when I was at most of times if a kid got a paddling you know they go home they're going to be in more trouble and you still get that some today but for the most part I mean even from the administrative side when I dreading make that phone call to a parent saying hey you know your son or daughter is done and I have to do this most time parents are super supportive you know I understand thank you for calling you know stuff like that and that's what we preach to do teachers is to make that parent contact and I think parents you know of support programs in dead space as seen by the sporting events the musicals we do our group sports groups are peer groups remember the thing that work at Bradley junior high school and now I walk play in it and does a great job we get back we're going to talk about some of the great things that are happening in the medical Business Academy and some of the stuff they got going on especially the the launch of last year of a cool news cool school sore and I got some other things on the general talk Walker Valley Medical business assistant principal Academy since system principal bow borders and talk a little bit about the teaching profession and now we're going to turn our attention specifically to the some of the cool things that are opening the medical Business Academy in and it's been it's been it's been a lot of fun seeing me I was here when the academy plan started to come and play in the sea where it's kind of evolved to over the course of the last year it's really been a good Academy of particulars done a terrific job we did a lot of exciting things going on in general we have a lot of certifications that kids can walk out of the school with you know our business department offer offers recertification got that the Microsoft certifications the the health science department offers the certified of the CNA program these these nursing students can walk out of here after passing state exam with a CNA license making 15 $10 an hour ride the high school so we have a lot of opportunities for students to have credentials in their hands when they leave this this campus across the state we're starting to see episodes like this is what a lot what they get caught early post-secondary opportunities but it's it's it's giving kids the opportunity to have something in their hand of value that they can use whether it's to prepare them for for some sort of post-secondary Education for some training or some technical school it's the give that kind of help shape or they're going to be so there's less you know I spend a lot of time when I graduate high school kind of trying to find my way in and hopefully but that you know it took me a long time to get through school cuz I didn't have you know the kind of guidance I guess I needed when I was in high school and and hopefully this is trying to eat to help cure some of those those ills yeah what we have is it with the academy programs you know basically you're you're students part-time near Junior picking out if you want to call so call major we didn't have that in school we took our basic English Math Science and we graduated but now we got these kids focusing on an area which they want to to go into as a career and I can get that here Walker Valley High School you know if they in a business Academy know we've got the accounting programs and in marketing programs and we have a health science you can walk out I know with no credit or EMS program are you can you take that you pass it then you go to Clayton State you got 3 hours of EMS credit so we have a lot of opportunities for students when they walk off this campus they can have college hours already in Pocket they can have their certifications in hand because it's competitive is it out there you need every Advantage you can write more things you can help prepare you the better off you will be business talk about the mark search we are in process of getting hole in the wall window that's going to be really cool it's going to have a concession stand type pull-down door on the front can be two barn doors that slide open so that's going to be our service window and when kids need anything but when I come by there and it's it's Islam all the time we sell coffee and they are we sell fun food Fridays we sell junk food popcorn you smell it popping all the way down the hallways also what we started doing his people that sell fundraiser sell to the bookstore so don't have to worry about the money that student will go up and purchase something in the bookstore like for example of the Key Club is selling Donuts tomorrow so they go up to the bookstore they buy donut the the book store sells it gives a receipt and then they weren't all their money for the bookstore so that did the club members don't worry about that site and then you got the kids that are getting the experience of learning how to type on a practical nurse programs they go in there they run the bookstore and they're getting so how to do this so it's it's really cool to see the evolution of the store cuz we talked about it for so long and once we get the hole in the wall which is to make it more look like a book another bookstore the school store you know that they sell everything that you need in there it's really really cool say it's been kind of a spearheading that for you we have to talk about one of the coolest pieces of technology that there is District obviously is the technology instructor a lot of cool things with Chromebooks in and I'll be in regular computers and all that but veiculos piece of equipment and luckily we got a grant for it because it was a very expensive what are expensive the animals table just talk a little bit about what it is and what it does yeah tell me how it came about Britney and came back from the Orlando conference that you guys went to know that I get to go to tell me she saw the school table and I said yeah I know what time it's going to and then in March table yeah how'd you know I've seen it you know it so it's on never ever teachers wish list that teaches this what's get one now Britney we can get this why not the pricing where was the stripes or let gets in the picture and I'm talkin all day and all that so we'll just get it I said her that if we can get this is too expensive what how much is it cost about $18,000. It is a car in a parking lot this technology how much is it about 75 grand what we can get that I know is hey it's being delivered here can you be at school to pick absolutely so a big semi pulls in we will it off take him to the room just say what it is it's a virtual dissection human cadaver dissection table that all medical schools are using there are very few high schools in the country that have this machine and we have to wonder Bradley High School wanted Walker Valley that buy Anatomy students get to use it's it's basically it you can do anything on the table that you can do to a human dissection in in medical school but ticket but the cool thing about it is you can hit restart and redo everything it's it's just the ultimate tool for any Anatomy teacher and the kids are just use it First Data can the class I have it on and they're just in all you know when I start showing what I can do very cool because you can broadcast the display up on the TV or you can actually it it's a table so when you wake up it looks like a cadaver lying on the table now it's it's video screen yeah but it looks iPad so we know where you can front you know a three fingers if there's different things you can do but what I have done over the past couple months I have mounted on the TV in my room. I have two monitors mounted on the wall now to wear I can hook to unhook the table up to kiss can actually do some. It is really if he if you ever absolutely fabulous that's just a fat that is technology the way it's meant to be you're never in this setting you're never going to have this is not medical school you're never going to access cadavers and things never but you're going this is is a very I mean it's a very close second it's a yes and it we have an update which I have not updated a table yet but I had to I have the thumb drive to do it the update is the big something ever done is Lay bad is another cadaver that gives me a total for on there at four different cadavers and the cool thing about it these cadavers are people that donated body to science and whatever medically what's wrong with these people always on the table like for example Carl who's them famous of of the mall of car was convicted killer and donate his body to science before he was executed and car all done having appendix so only on his cadaver you can open him up and there's no appendix there because he didn't have one and have all the stuff came with them on the kit on the cavern in the kids can do it they think they can they can save the work and they can you know I can I can access it just like you doing the media World they they have a project they can do they do it group they saved on thumb drive to turn into me I graded you know it's it's it's awesome it's all I can say it's a really fabulous piece of equipment for our show today will think this is borders for for join us it was good to be it's been a long time we get the opportunity to sit down and do this but I picture for taking a few minutes of your time out episode next podcast is going to be in early November going to have both your supervisor Tracy Blackburn and math supervisor Beth Fugate are going to be on talk a little bit about some of the things that are happened in the ELA and math and probably will social studies and science as well as we will have a few minutes to talk to them about what's going on in the district and those front so excited to have them on here in just a couple weeks.
