another edition of the BCS text podcast I am I think it I think I said it wrong again this time but we're not going to redo it again it is the BCS Tech podcast I'm Scott web instructional technology coordinator for Bradley County schools and I am happy to have on the show one of my all-time favorite people going way back to my beginning of my days as this little knucklehead is is strolling through the hallways causing Havoc the Bradley Junior High School mr. Patrick Spangler assistant principal at Bradley Central High School how you doing today thanks for that it is it is my pleasure thanks for thanks for dealing with the short delay in getting the podcast up and running today but we are happy to have you look good I'm so glad to be here and yeah it seems like forever ago since we are trolling the both of us troll in the Bradley junior high school hallways but but you know I couldn't be couldn't be more thankful for guys like you and just the mentors that I've had along the way that have been involved in the Bradley County school system and help me get to where I'm at today so we may throw your favorite coach out here in just a minute and you may have to answer that one correctly or they could be recipe political you may have to email to be politically correct on that before we get too deep into this podcast but has Patrick to be on because you have a a unique not need unique but you know you have a family that has been very much involved in education all your life your your sisters in is still in in the business if you will I just just talk about you know why you decided to get involved in a yeah you know that in mind thinking back to growing up and making those career decisions and things like that I think it was because I always said I never wanted education I'm not going to be a teacher are teachers the retired School teachers I'm never going to do it and now look where I'm at today no but the business administration degree just taking a step back at getting here but they're going back to the University graduate of a business administration degree straight out of straight out of college I went into working for a HR firm HR company Randstad North America worked at different on site locations and and in traveled around in a visiting locations and just doing the daily HR thing did that for about four and a half years at about that time it was when Kent Smith kind of boys basketball coach at Bradley high school started kind of getting involved and me and him started having some conversations and it's at point cuz Jason reuter was switching over from the boys came to the girls team and we just kind of started talking and I really loved what I was doing wasn't really looking to make a career change and then but it I kind of entertaining the idea of saying if I could teach doing something in the business World in then also coach men that sound like a pretty good world so right and it's there's nothing wrong I think there's a lot of us that that have F walk that path or something similar path you know I was I was going to be either knee deep in computers or I was going to be an accountant or something along those lines I study both in my undergrad working and eventually my desire to get into coaching and kind of lead me in a direction and will and end ultimately I fell in love with the fur the profession as it as it is but you know what I think coaching played a role in in in my initial interest in getting involved in education we both come from an athletic background and when is it Sparks that competitive fire Ennis and you know it and then getting an education and kind of you know being able to walk the halls with those athletes your coaching with every day and then also you know seeing them develop is young men and women in and that secondary level it's just that it's very rewarding and I'm so happy that I made that move I've been in education for 10 years this going on my 10th year it's hard to believe how fast it goes I was just an office talking with the students the other day and I was talking when I when I was sitting in your shoes probably 17 18 years ago and it kind of hit me that's not true my 20th High School reunions coming up 99 trip going to tell you about it where I'm at in the high school reunions trying but it's it's but but once you get into coaching and then you start the process of becoming a teacher did you see a I don't a change but for me it was I started to fall in love with with what what teaching and education was all about it was it went from being yeah I enjoy I want to be a coach I want to do this and then there's this education piece but as I grew and an in started to mature it be the education piece for me became more more important and more more impactful it's one of those things like you here when you begin educate like being an educator in your ear there your your your coaching your trying to lesson plan you're trying to get used to just doing what Educators do and you and you kind of forget the reason you really doing what you do because you get caught in trying to do the best job that you can do and trying to do everything and then I would probably say probably about that third or fourth year that I become an educator it really kind of the light bulb click like I'm making an impact this is how I'm making an impact and this is how I need to continue to look at things and build on making you no more in packs and just bit just being being a part of it right because it's I think the focus from he went from I can impact this group of kids that I'm coaching and all that too I can double triple quadruple impact those children that are walking through my classroom and doing something for them and being there for them and I think that's just part of it I think coaches in general are are loving caring people passionate people obviously but you know I think that begins as as you get into it and it start to expand your role in education crutches see that Achmed expansion of of having that impact of all those children it's one the reason why I'm in my current job is I can impact more kids and this role than I ever could being just a classroom teacher alien and it's it's just you know every day's a new Every Day's a new day and you know and I know we'll get to it in a little bit but I feel like I feel like I said that the impacts maybe that I've been able to be a part of this year have been a little different than the ones I've been in the past and then they roll Avenue will get into that here shortly but but it it it it it has you know for probably the first seven 7/8 years I worked in a lot of different different classrooms I worked with freshman I worked with worked with Junior seniors or whatever so I mean it it is kind of cool to see the different types of impact you make on a key throughout their High School career you know from grade level 2 grade level 2 grade level and you had a lot of a different roles you've been very obviously business teacher and all that you've been very involved in in in in tune with your sister have been involved with work based learning and trying to change some of the trajectory of that program talk about some of the things you've worked on and work through here the first few years as as a as an educator yeah you know I told him that Department talk about every every class you can probably teach I think with my sister move rolls move down to the other the central office she developed a class called like business culinary something that nobody in the state of Tennessee you like head ever I don't even think we had to create standards or something for it and is she left and I got I got to take over that class so it was kind of that was kind of a fun start but yeah I told accounting business management all the classes that business can offer but just the past 3-4 years I have been more involved in work based learning and that's it that's a big-time passion of mine of connecting those kids to yeah I was just going to say talk about that because people here work-based learning and what it was maybe when they were in school to what what the goal of what it's going to be in the future just talk about that talk about the the changing workplace learning others have may have heard Co-op Service Learning you know now refer to it as work-based learning to where it's really just an opportunity for our students to get outside of the the classroom and get that practical experience within an industry within a local company here that can just provide them some on-the-job experience and just kind of help them before they transition to that next phase of right and I think that's an important because I said have taught in and see TV or career and Technology education it's it's seeing is giving her students a chance to to have the see how what we're talking about in class supplies and works in the real world it's application peace you know that city is just phenomenal and just the programs that we have in Bradley County Schools we are just so fortunate for those and I just the they weren't based learning pieces the end piece for that senior junior senior level 2 where they have those three classes leading up they have those were there taught safety skills were there call the content knowledge that they need and then the end of it the end of the journey is to get them out on the job and so we've had great success with Bradley County schools in the end work based learning our community support just been phenomenal and I'm in accepting our students and we're not only we're not only going to stop here we're excited to see where it can go we've expanded our opportunities in the advanced manufacturing World criminal criminal justice and business and marketing and and that we're just excited about where we're at but we're all so excited about looking at where we're going to be able to go with opportunities for our students and we will get it after the break was we'll talk a little bit at Sprouts things you been involved with you had opportunity because you don't know to make a couple trips now to Germany and and and tried to help bring some of what makes them a manufacturing power and and in the way they kind of training and in teach their workers and their students and in trying to bring some of that methodology back to our students in into Bradley County will talk Lil bit more about that after the break you like me I've had a have had a and made a big change obviously going from a classroom teacher to some sort of administer Mission I argue I'm a technology coordinator that means different things for different days but but talk about the the reasoning behind why you decided to make that change and in m and how you hope that and can impact the students at Bradley Central High School what I've been able to do I enjoy the HR I enjoyed classroom teacher Android moving to work based learning you know and then this the end in August move to an admin role and I love serving others I love providing support wherever I can for I support and I love just working together with others it's just it's almost like being a coach or kind of in charge of motivating your group and trying to get the best out of it and I think that's the same mindset as kind of I have with the with the people I work with and students I work with and just you know the overall Pro should I just enjoy the change it's it's a different it's a different role I'm in a classroom teacher but there's you know it's it's it's in a we talked a lot about this already it's the impact it's being able to it instead of impacting those 2030 Student Center in your classroom every block it to now playing a role in in a hole group of kids in a whole group of teachers and trying to set your vision and an M Pool people to Direction and sometimes it's pull sometimes it's get out of their way and just let them do their thing but it's it's that's all part of the process and it's a very important role in and a terrific people like you doing it you know it's a challenge every every day brings a new challenge I knew that was going to be in this role in the other AD group at Bradley just said just be ready for the first day you will never know what's going to happen and I was like okay okay okay that's in the first okay I get it I get it I get in so that this group of group of Administrators at Bradley Central High School with mr. Shoemaker and all the others is just just been an incredible crew to work with and you know it it it has I love I love the love the challenge of it we have some phenomenal students that are at our school we have phenomenal staff and just excited to just excited to see if we can you can you can you can feel I mean for me and you know I've not spent a lot of time in that building but you can you can feel there's that there's an air of excitement about some of the things are going I don't want to spoil anything cuz we'll get in all that after the break but and I think you're having a big part of what some of the is that are happening down there there's there's there's some real excitement and some great Vibes and there's some great things going on down there really brag all day about the CT programs about the about the math and science things that are going on about to take a break here in but we are going to take a short commercial break when we come back what about some of the great things that are happening at Bradley High School including some interesting things that you're doing an in advisory you've been a big part of of some of the changes that have been happening across the county and advisory so we're going to talk a little bit about me wrap it up talking about a tutor now to the Germany to take kind of see what they're going kind of see where all that late be right back here listening to the BCS be out let me see if I can do that again because I have not said it correctly yet today you are now listening to the BCS Tech podcast for the right back after short break hello this is Brittany Cannon work based learning coordinator for Bradley County Schools did you know that we have over 114 students from Bradley and Walker Valley working paid and unpaid Career Cluster internships the best turn on your investment Bradley County Schools growing students building futures what am I to the beach BCS Tech podcast I'm now over 4 with three strikeouts two of them looking on trying to say that BCS Tech podcast s Tech podcast on the radio edit sometimes it doesn't come out as well as it should I enjoyed today by Patrick Spangler one of the assistant principals at Bradley Central High School and brother to the Sprint can that's that's typically how I'm either in or is there straight there straight was going to say so you have a. When your on your twin is a doctor how good that much really need to get started because I never said that that's always my Spanglish doctor spangler's brother are Brittany Cannon's brother so will you can whatever I still love you Mom yeah there may I may have gotten the text message yesterday from somebody in the land of spangler's that was disappointed that they were not the first to be on the show yeah but you know that's okay that's happened so we'll have that particular person on at some point in time that'll be that will not be it in the 30 to 40 minutes there's no way we're going to have to put the extra big hard drive to record all that information is is battling some things and it just kind of repeat the people some update on that however on is doing the people with in Bradley County Schools WeatherTech Bradley High School troll office Ocoee middle school or just Bradley County schools in general for the support through this it it it was a pretty difficult time and still is a pretty difficult time but but Daddy status had some really good treatments and he is he is positive and we are we are just so thankful and blessed that we've been able to to to get to where we're at at this point and I just I just said to It's a Blessing ever you know he has a lot of friends with in Bradley County schools at whether it's you know picking him up to take him to treatment or whether it's just a phone call or whether it's a card or whatever like that it definitely means a lot to my dad as as well as the family so he is I give him a hard time because every time I talk to him especially when I got in this row it was like talking to Monty Hall make a deal I need to do this because he cared about a school so much and care about his people and his students and you can see that and everybody gave him a hard time but you know he's a he's a great guy and does is done a lot of great things in and we're all pulling for him pray completely completely yeah I was I was kind of in a conversation yesterday and we were we were talking about a few things around the table and and somebody looked at me and said that's Ron Spangler make it over you it's really cool to because you know he when he retired this past year and this is just kind of you know I I got a new office with the new role and I was able to take his Tennessee stuff and putting all kind of makes it extra special. probation office so I'm again I just can't think Bradley County Schools you just have everybody that asked about him and sent prayers and and whether it sent you no food one way or the other I mean I just can't express know how thankful we are taking forever and ever will will definitely everybody will definitely continue to keep you and your family and and Ron in your prayer in our in our thoughts and prayers he's at he is a great guy Bradley Central High School we we talked a little bit before the break about about some of the great things that are happening up there I see me and you even listen you have even got Terry McClain and using a computer I mean and doing some things that the amount of things in change I've seen just with that man alone it's been remarkable this year but there's a really a lot of great things happening at Bradley Central one amazing guy and it's just doing phenomenal. carried away from a technology standpoint he is just he is rocking it out by jumping in with both feet. I just want to kind of pinpoint rrr Beta Club the Beta Club group I just went to some competition place I had it had it in my notes right here I want to make sure that I I want to make sure that I say it Michelle's parents on for you got to have show I know right I know but just you know we were received a first-place and agriculture science are robotics team has just an incredible thing going on and won first place in the state at the Beta Club Convention and will be going to Oklahoma and there's other things are Beta Club show choir placed and will be going and several other individual I mean just some outstanding Talent going on in in in Bradley the high school with an opportunity to go that's Oklahoma later in the year to compete at a national level are soul judging team with it was in the FFA just place first place in the state I don't know no I don't know don't quote me on this but I don't think that this is happened that it's happened in a really long time so this is a major major major accomplishment for us probably one of the top it mean when the top FFA programs in in the state in the country are our instructors Jamie Haynes and Luann carrier just phenomenal this is the 51st gold emblem the Bradley Central High School FFA has received so Florida School's nationally that can really sit here and speak that so you know where based learning is just is just continuing to be on the on the rise I can't go to mention from a public Education Foundation standpoint I will two teachers receive the fun the teacher grants karash Reagan and Betsy Gilbert heard from Betsy I think I know what she's going to do with her I just met you and you know just like I said I could sit here all all all day and kind of talk about two things are sports programs we just have an excellent set of staff that were really really really hard and an excellent the students that are just that are just doing phenomenal things so well and that you know that starts at that it starts at the top and in that you have good leadership in place and then you know you said standards for your students your teachers in your staff and and then just try to go out there and sell it and then you guys are doing a great job of that at a choir concert band concert last night in awesome I saw some pictures on Twitter last night performances out there that were just great so the yes completely just excited about all the things from CTE to Fine Arts to sports that are going on I mean if you have especially the school's largest you got to have options for students because you're going to have one group you know that's into this and another group that's into that and you want to have quality throughout and that's what you hope that your building is a schooling and you guys are doing a great job of that completely to mention just a few minutes and we're going to we're going to wrap this up a little shorter than normal just to get him on his way cuz I couldn't get a computer to work earlier I took a little bit you've been really involved with what's happening in advisory to give everybody an indication of what advisory is which kind of hope to accomplish with an m in the direction it's kind of headed out of 45-50 minute block that that we have to to either provide our students with some soft skills training to provide them with ACT prep to provide them with just some skills are documents are artifacts whatever they can take with them to kind of 8 the process of them being college and career-ready when they leave when they leave the high school's we from from the team whether it's at Bradley Central High School to Walker Valley us working together to try to come up with a kind of a unified plan to make whatever works if you can't discuss it it's a work-in-progress and you know where real hoping to work towards an electronic portfolio we're having to jump through some hoops from a technology standpoint that's great I'm talking to you maybe that's what I've already been. I've already been in those conversations buddy I'm already there I know there's going to be some Kingston and along the way but we're hoping to be able to start a start small bill from there and spelling I think some of the things that are happening from senior interviews to electronic portfolio towards the goal is to have students graduate prepared for either post-secondary studies or for be ready to go into the clinic Workforce so it's in in in tar job it's not we can just graduate kids and and all the sort of stuff we got to have kid we got to graduate kids that are prepared to go and those whatever path you know they they they deem best for them and and we advisory. Just part of that process we were talking about those soft skills that a nice person needs but when they leave but we're also trying to get a little more a little more connection between maybe the advise the teacher and the students were there they're building mentoring relationships as well as reviewing some transcripts as well as just been more involved you know it's a collective effort it's a collective effort from every teacher on our on our campus to make sure that student that enters our doors are walking out those doors prepared and it's a challenge it is a challenge because you have you have and we talked about this you have kids that have different levels of support away from school and weave to be able to take to fill in the gaps where those kids don't have the same level supported and this is this among the many other things as ways that kind of help to fill those gaps and get our students graduated and ready for their next Journey you know where at we've got work to do you know I made to be real we've got work to do but I think we're headed in the right direction and you know I'm excited about where we can go with this in you know in the end the team's I can't just I can't reiterate enough how how hard they worked on this and you know we're going to continue to look at the processes and look at the processes and you know go from there Wesley fully wrap it up we want to thank you mr. Spangler for joining us on the BCS Tech podcast. You have made two visits now over to Germany to kind of look at a variety of things the thought process of of why go over there and and look at what's going on in and what we hope to accomplish and bring back to our students I mean kinda you know I mean the VA I have that opportunity I never thought 10 years ago whenever I become an educator would I ever have visited Germany twice but but it really there model their apprenticeship model vocational training model is just it is just phenomenal and we've taken some really good things with no we're not going to be able to mirror the the the the the system mirror the the process is but we do feel there are many many of the processes that we're going to be able to implement at the pie Center at went went when when we when we get the passenger up and running and and an even even starting now I'm looking at looking at the things we're currently doing and seeing how we can kind of tweak those things to the way they run their vocational training model and and really that really the ultimate go get our students training at the earliest level we can get them trained you know where the combination of experience and an education so you know what the things I've always been it's got to start we've got to start we got to start now that's one of the things I think several countries do a much better job of that it is is helping students not pushing them into a robot identifying where they best fit and then giving them to support so that they can be ready to succeed when they get to that BS completely I mean wait we visited a a middle school class right witcha McCullough Junior High over there it was I believe his sixth grade class it was a pottery class and they were already implementing engineering skills in their Pottery curriculum or whatever project they were working on it that point in and it and it makes you think you know we we really tried to I think about think of ways to get more stem you know for instance at Charleston at Charleston Elementary School getting the stem stuff going there as well as the Middle School level so it is in the works we have some really great things that are going on but see in the model send the model of an in Germany and visiting a vacacional training center visiting the vocational training schools the junior high schools and talking to just all parties involved was just an incredible experience that real I miss changed kind of like the guest changed my view of how education could be you know or where we can take education with her where we can go right way it's it's not so much that weekend we want to turn right now I just want to put our give our students the best chance that's why you know and I argue about devices or this and that uniform a technology standpoint that because I that's you know we need to have this and this and this it's because it's what's going to help best prepare our students for when they take the step and once they walk across that stage staging and we put a diploma in their hand are we getting is are we doing more than just giving him another a paper piece of paper are we you know sending in on their way to pursue those career opportunities that they've been able to be a part of you know before whenever they leave just if I could add to that we are completely it is we are sitting since developing the partnership between Bakker with it but Walkers are best partner Bradley Central High School and we are so incredibly thankful for them and what they're doing for us but we're trying to wear it we're in the process of seeing how seeing the type of Grants we see another type of funding opportunities to create a teacher Exchange program with a vocational training schools in Germany so big so big and so completely passionate about this
