Lake Forest Middle Students Grow and Learn with Indoor Hydroponic Gardening

Students in Mrs. Dodson’s class at Lake Forest Middle School are taking hands-on learning to a new level through their ZipGrow indoor hydroponic garden.

After planting seeds in mid-September, students recently harvested kale and dill, sampling their crops by preparing kale chips and dill dip. They are also growing lettuce, cilantro, and basil as part of an ongoing project that connects science, sustainability, and nutrition.

The ZipGrow system allows plants to grow indoors without soil by circulating nutrient-rich water through vertical towers equipped with LED lights. This innovative setup uses up to 90% less water than traditional gardening and enables students to observe the complete growing process from seed to harvest—all within the classroom.

Bradley County Schools celebrates Mrs. Dodson and her students for their creativity and commitment to hands-on, cross-curricular learning experiences.
