Prospect Fourth Graders Explore Natural Resource Depletion Through Hands-On Science

Fourth-grade students at Prospect Elementary brought science to life through an engaging activity that demonstrated how quickly natural resources can decline when they aren’t renewed. Using Skittles and M&Ms to represent different types of natural resources, students began with a full “supply” and removed a few pieces at set intervals to model real-world usage.

As the activity progressed, students observed their resources shrinking and discussed what happens when people use materials faster than they can be replaced. Afterward, they recorded the number of candies remaining at each interval and created bar graphs to show their results over time.

This meaningful lesson helped students visualize resource depletion, strengthen their data-collection skills, and better understand the importance of responsible resource management. Prospect is proud of the thoughtful discussions, teamwork, and learning that took place during this activity.
