hi my name is Jody Perkins I'm a bcba from the company Katie and based in Atlanta today what are they talking about the how to help your child give up the pacifier if you haven't watch the basics no please yet please do so first because we will be using terminology and strategies I'm covered in that presentation in 2 days so part of becoming a big kid is giving up the pacifier and that can be upsetting for kids at first cuz it's change is essential for helping them me there's important Developmental and social milestones so what when why do we want to give up the pacifier so the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that we give it up after six months it was kind of young I don't think my kids were that young but it is to help reduce the possibility of ear infections we also know that if a child uses a pacifier Beyond age to do it can lead to dental problems and if that's even more likely to happen if they continue to use that passy after age for pacifiers also carry around a lot of yucky stuff like yeast and bacteria which can give the  like your infections and dental infections and colds stomach viruses so we just want to avoid those as much as possible and then speech therapist recommend that your child stop using the passy by age 12 decrease the likelihood of articulation disorders that can happen due to ear infections Orchard Dental misalignments so what are we going to do to help our child give up a c so we have to do a little planning first before we can Implement a procedure so we're going to take a few days to observe our child and how they use their passy so how often do they use at the they haven't let him all day long do they only use it during certain activities they only use it at bed and nap time so get an idea of how much your child using it also think about when they I need it the most and when you need it the most of what is the most exciting activity in their day that they need to have their passie with them when do you need the peace and quiet that the passage provides is it like when you're on a phone call for work is it when your the car is that when you're out of church or grocery shopping so think about those things then you're going to bring your passes to fly down to just one you're going to have to control access to the path I see you don't want hidden ones all over the house that your child can sneak if you you if you're going to use the pass key in the car and the community you can have one in the house and one in the car but that's it I'm a special box to store the passing in and make it a fun box on the light decorating and make it exciting and then determine a place that you can put that box that your child can't get to it so maybe on a high shelf in the closet in your glove box in the car then identify strong edible or tangible reinforce or your child something that your child is really likely to work for and be compliant bar so maybe it's mini marshmallows or maybe it's I've had time but then once you've identified them you have to limit access to them outside of pasty transition time so if you UniFi mini marshmallows is your child's favorite food they can't have it at lunch they can't have it at snack only for this passage of time if it's iPad time they can't live iPad all day they can only get it during his passie Transit and then you might want to find a book or video or make a social story about giving up the passy to read with your child in the days leading up to this just to help prepare them so there are two different plans that we would look at are very similar but there is the daytime plan for if your child uses the passy all day during the day and then there's a nighttime plan if they only use it for sleeping if your child uses it for both of those things that both times so what we're going to do for the daytime plan is identify the activities when you're going to allow them to access the passy so maybe you let them use the passy while they watch TV and you're on a phone call from work maybe you let them use the pasta when they're at church identify what there's times Monday or if you're using a visual schedule which we cover in a different presentation consider putting a symbol on the schedule pieces where they're allowed to have the pasta that lets them know that the passes available during these activity so if like TV time is on there put the Pasty symbol on TV time don't automatically give your child the passy so say it's TV time they go sit down at the TV they don't ask for the passing don't give it to him wait until request it if your child request the Pasty during a non-passive activity so say you're outside playing ball and they're asked for their passie just call and remind them the next time it's available so what we can't have pasta while we're outside but you can when it's TV time and then just continue what you're doing and don't say any more about it I'll give any more attention to it once your child has requested the passy you're going to ask them to wait so in the beginning you're going to start with wait time of about 30 hands to a minute so your childhood can I have my pasty is TV time passes available sure but first wait and you wait maybe you set a timer let them know how long it's going to be your child weight not engaging and undesired Behavior give them the passy accompanied by Behavior specific price I love how you waited great job waiting for your past it now if your child doesn't deserve a they have a tantrum they scream and cry when that timer goes off they're still going to get access to their passy but you're not going to give any praise with it you're just going to put the passy down where they can see it and grab it and you're going to walk off and go do whatever it was you were going to do you're not going to give any herbal attention about undesired Behavior remember we only name behaviors we want our kids to continue doing like watch TV quietly but the passing away we are not going to name behaviors we don't want them to continue doing so then a few days you're going to increase the amount of wait time or for you give your child their passy but only if they've been successful at the shorter wait time keep your weight time as natural as possible so like after why you going to be up to like 5 at the white time you're not going to want to stand there like wait for 5 set the timer for 5 minutes late for your pasty and walk off go to the kitchen do whatever it was you were going to do then when that activity is over or when my times over than you get in the past two years before when the activity where the pasta is allowed is over you're going to instruct your child to put the passy in the special box your new statements not question so we're just a time to put your pinky and the binky box we are not going to say can you put your pass in the box for me we're going to make I am and where I can give them the option to tell us know on that one if your child puts the passing in the Box without having undesired Behavior you're going to provide access to that strong reinforcer that you might identify them that behavior specific specific I love how you put your passing in the passing box you can have a chocolate chip cookie if your child refuses to put the pass away you're physically going to prompt them to do so think about that three step prompting that we've covered in we're on trainings don't talk during this process don't give access to the reinforcer so they're not going to get chocolate chip cookie this time and we're just going to direct them to the next activity in the day so and overhand pass in the Box okay time to check your schedule it's lunchtime that kind of thing if your child has to pass you away but they do engage in some of those undesirable Behavior so they put the pasta in the box with a like you're not going to say anything about the undesired behaviors and you're going to give less enthusiastic praise and a smaller amount of that reinforcement so you might say thank you for putting your passy in the passing box you can have half of a chocolate chip cookie so it's just less the reinforcements that we're still recognizing what they did that we want them to continue we are not naming that behavior we don't want to see again okay so then map or the nighttime plan it is very similar so I'm going to like speed through it point out where the differences are so just like you were doing with the activity or pass is allowed when you put your child down to sleep don't automatically give them the passing wait until they request it unless they've requested it you're going to do that weight procedure so just like for their ear to set the timer they're going to wake that amount of time you're going to respond in the same ways that we just went over for the daytime plan whether they are in Gate whether they do it with appropriately are if they wait with behaviors same person every couple of days increase the amount of wait time if your child has been successful with the shorter wait times keep those wait times as natural as possible I'm again like when you start building at that time like the okay wait times now 7 minutes. your kids room lead what we're hoping is eventually they're going to fall asleep before wait times over in the past is just naturally going to fade out when your child wakes up the next morning you're going to instruct them to put the pasta in the pasta box in the special box so same thing you statements not questions same procedure if they put it away without engaging and undesired Behavior has lots of praise and that strong reinforcements if they need if they refuse to put it away we're going to physically prompt and not attention if they put it away but they have a little bit of behavior problems during it we're going to give we're not going to give praise in a smaller amount of reinforcement for what play dead correctly so a couple of don'ts from when you're implementing this don't pick a super stressful or busy time don't do this the week before Christmas don't do this new just moved into a new house and it's going to require time and patience don't expect perfection in the first few days there's likely going to be tantrums and crying and all of that kind of stuff your child's not just automatically going to know what you're expecting of them so it's going to take some time to train them on this don't be discouraged if there setbacks you might have a time. Where your child fell asleep 4 nights in a row before wait time was over and never use the Pasty and then that fifth night they have a huge meltdown and want that passy and don't fall asleep. okay there's things are going to happen just be consistent and keep going never cut the tip of your child's pacifier this is sometime this is recommended and lots of places but it's a horrible idea we never went to alter our child's passy but I like choking hazard so please don't ever ever do that don't give in and allow your child access to the passage during undesired Behavior or Tantrums so you know things are going to happen they're going to have a meltdown and you know the past he would see that don't even if you do this is going to take twice as long to be effective and work so you got a hold strong and be consistent and not give in during those tantrums and then don't ever take the passy away is punishment for unrelated Behavior so like you know it right before TV time your child hits his brother don't be like one that you can't have the passage TV time because you hit your brother if you've identified passes available during TV time then passes available during TV time we don't like confuse our child by complicating the system in that way so thank you so much for coming today and I look forward to seeing you at the next time bye
