Assistant Principal Carissa Sapp at Lake Forest Middle School in Cleveland, TN, has been named a finalist for the 2010 Warren E. Shull National Middle Level Student Council Advisor of the Year Award. The award is sponsored by the National Association of Student Councils (NASC) and the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP). Sapp is one of six finalists from which a national winner will be announced during NASC's annual conference in Indiana this summer.
Sapp has advised the student council at Lake Forest for twelve years and has hosted two student council state workshops on the school's campus. Under Mrs. Sapp's leadership, the student council has received the Four Star Council Award for the past four years from the Tennessee Association of Student Councils. "The finalists for the Warren E. Shull Award are skilled educators who epitomize the commitment student council advisors make to promote leadership, service, and civic engagement as qualities of good citizens through student council," said Jeff R. Sherrill, associate director, National Association of Student Councils. "NASC congratulates Carissa Sapp for her exemplary efforts to nurture and develop these qualities in middle level students who are just beginning their journey as leaders."
"Through Mrs. Sapp's leadership, our student council is recognized throughout the state as one of the leading middle school student council organizations in Tennessee, " said Principal Ritchie Stevenson.
Student Body President Victoria Jones stated, "What impresses me about her is that she always keeps an open mind and tries to understand her students' concerns and puts them first."
The National Association of Student Councils (NASC) provides and promotes professional development and leadership training to student council advisers who, in turn, teach leadership skills to student council members. NASC is dedicated to preparing and empowering student leaders to better serve their schools and communities.
